Abandoning the night prayers is against the Prophet’s teachings

Imaam al-Bukhaaree named the chapter: “Chapter: It is disliked for a person to leave the night prayers after he was in the practice of offering them (regularly).” Then he mentioned the following Hadeeth:

Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas reported: the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said to me: ❝O Abdullaah! Do not be like so-and-so; he who used to get up at night for optional prayer but then abandoned it later.❞
📚[Saheehain]

⚡️The Prophet ﷺ used to offer the Qiyaam al-Lail in Ramadhaan and outside of Ramadhaan
📚[Saheehain]

⚡️The Prophet ﷺ Used to offer the Witr prayer even while traveling.
📚[Saheeh Muslim]

⚡️Sometimes a person is prevented from doing good deeds because of the sin he had committed
👉Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله (Summarized):

1️⃣ There is no doubt that if a person is PREVENTED from doing good deeds, then there are reasons behind it, and the biggest obstruction is sins.

2️⃣ Good deeds brings one closer to Allaah, as Allaah تعالى said in Hadeeth Qudsee: ❝He who draws close to Me by the span of a palm I draw close to him by the cubit, and he who draws close to Me by the cubit I draw close to him by the space (covered) by two hands, and he who walks towards Me I rush towards him.❞ [Saheehain]

3️⃣ The one who sets the alarm to get up at night to pray night prayers but doesn’t get up, then he is someone who has weak resolution. (So, what about the one who does not set the alarm at all?)

4️⃣ If the person had firm resolution, he would have got up for night prayers. Like how a person, if he had an interview (or a meeting) at a certain time, and if the alarm rang, he would get up quickly because he is determined.
📚[End of quote from the video]

⚡️Leaving off doing good deeds just because it not Fardh (obligatory)?

Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen aslo said: ❝That is why I say: That which is an error is that some people whenever a command comes to him from Allaah and His Messenger, he begins to inquire about it. So he says: “Is this command Waajib (obligatory) or is it Mustahab (recommended)?” as many people say today. This is a question which must be thrown out and not asked because the Sahaabah (Companions of the Messenger) رضي الله عنهم whenever the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded them with something, they never said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Is this command Waajib or is it Mustahab or other than that?” Rather they acted and had conviction without even asking.❞

📚[Explanation of 40 Hadeeth of al-Nawawee, Hadeeth #2]

Allaah loves the deeds which are done moderately and regularly, even if they are few:
Th

e Prophet ﷺ said: ❝Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity as Allaah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allaah is that which is done regularly.❞
📚[Saheehain]

The Testimony of one who abandons Witr is not accepted:

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said: “All praise is for Allaah alone; Witr is Sunnah Mu’akkadah by the consensus of the Muslim (scholars). And the one who persistently misses it, then his testimony is not accepted.”
📚[Majmoo al-Fataawa (23/88)]

Shaikh al-Islaam رحمه الله also said: “The one who is persistent in leaving it (Sunan al-Rawaatib), then this is evidence about his lack of religion (faith) and his testimony will not be accepted according to the Madhhab of (Imaam) Ahmad (Ibn Hanbal), (Imaam) al-Shaafiee and others.”
📚[Majmoo al-Fataawa (23/127)]

There is no sin on missing the Night Prayers, but such a person is missing out on great reward. And like Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen said, one should try to get up, even if it only 30 mins before Fajr and pray whatever is possible.

HOW TO BE PATIENT & AVOID SINS – Ibn al-Qayyim

FlRST: Knowing that sin is repulsive, despicable, and contemptible. And Allah only prohibited and forbade sins as a protection and safeguard against evil and vices, just as a caring parent protects his son from harm. This reason would lead the sensible person to abandon sins even if there was no threat of punishment connected to them.

SECOND: [Having] shyness from Allah the Exalted. When the servant knows Allah is looking at him, watching over him, and sees him and hears him, he will be too shy in front of his Lord to expose him self to Allah’s wrath.

THIRD: Contemplating Allah’s favor upon you and His kindness towards you, for surely sins remove blessings, and this is inevitable.

No person has ever committed a sin except that Allah removed a blessing from him due to that sin. If he repents, that blessing or a similar blessing will return to him. If he persists upon the sin, the blessing will not return to him. Sins continue to remove blessings until all the blessings are gone. Allah the Exalted said:

Verily! Allah will not change the good condition of people as long as they do not change their state of goodness themselves.
[Surah ar-Ra’d 13:11]

And the greatest blessing is the blessing of faith (Imaan). The crimes of fornication, stealing, [consuming] intoxicants, and robbery remove faith and snatch it away. Some of the Salaf would say, “I committed a sin so I was deprived from praying the night prayer for an entire year.” Others said, “I committed a sin, so I was deprived from understanding the Qur’an.” Concerning this, it was said:

If you have a blessing, then protect it, for surely sins remove blessings.

In summary, sins are fire that consumes blessings just as fire consumes firewood. We seek refuge in Allah from losing the favors He has bestowed upon us or our safety and security being changed to other than that.

The continuation of the night prayers after ramadhan.

And as Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen had mentioned, if one cannot wake up in the last third of the night, then they can try to wake up half an hour before Fajr and pray as much as they can.

So, instead of eleven Rakaaat, one can pray Five (2+2+1), instead of long Surahs, one can recite the shorter ones.

We might not reach the same level of Taqwa as we do in Ramadhaan, but we can still strive for it. The month of Ramadhaan has ended, but the race towards the Jannah is still on. As Allaah تعالى says:

{And hasten towards the forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous}
📚[Surah aal-`Imraan (3):133]

And:

{Race towards the forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believed in Allaah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allaah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allaah is the possessor of great bounty.}
📚[Surah al-Hadeed (57):21]

We have to strive as long as we are alive and able:

{And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death)}
📚[Surah al-Hijr (15):99]

A model of taking accountability.

Many will be remorseful on the Day of Judgment for missing out on the opportunities to do more good deeds in this world.

Not reaching a higher status in the Jannah due to laziness, or unwillingness to follow the Prophet’s ﷺ path, or opposing his teachings will be a source of regret on the Day of Resurrection. Those who did not follow will regret, and those who did follow will regret too that why didn’t they strive a little more. Do not belittle any good deed, no matter how small it is. Did not the Prophet ﷺ say: ❝Save yourself even if it is by half a date❞?
📚[Saheehain]

The businesses which are earning in Millions and Billions, they compare their records/profits of the current year with the records of the same period of the previous year. Example: If in the first quarter of 2021 they made a net profit of Nine Hundred Million (900M), but in the same period of 2022 they made a net profit of Seven Hundred Fifty Million (750M), they will focus on the LOSS of One Hundred Fifty Million (150M). Even though they made a NET PROFIT (income after deduting all operating expenses and taxes) of 750M, but since it fell by 150M in comparison to the previous year, it will be all over the news that they made a loss of 150M, or that there sales have fallen (and no one will talk about the profit they have earned). The Board of Directors of the company will down play what they have earned, and their emphasis will be on the market share that they have lost to their competitors. This is how they target growth for the company!

Similarly, we as Muslims should learn from this, we should also aim for improvement, aim for growth, aim higher. We should make the month of Ramadhaan as a standard, as a benchmark, and compare our other eleven months with this month, and we should strive in the other months like how we did in Ramadhaan. If we could do it in Ramadhaan then we have the potential to do it in other months as well. We have, in the Prophet ﷺ a best example to follow. He prayed the night prayers in Ramadhaan and outside of Ramadhaan, and never missed Witr, even while traveling. We should also try to Fast twice a week or at least three days a month, recite some portions of the Qur’aan daily.

Do not abandon good deeds after Ramadhaan:

As Allaah تعالى said:

{And the Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ) will say: “O my Lord! Verily, my people deserted this Qur’aan}
📚[Surah al-Furaqaan (25):30]

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported: I heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ saying: ❝Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Shaitaan runs away from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited.❞
📚[Saheeh Muslim].

Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas reported: the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said to me: ❝O Abdullaah! Do not be like so-and-so; he who used to get up at night for optional prayer but then abandoned it later.❞
📚[Saheehain]

Allaah loves the deeds which are done moderately and regularly, even if they are few. We do not have to be perfect, but we should strike a path between negligence and excessiveness:

{So keep your duty to Allaah and fear Him as much as you can}
📚[Surah al-Taghaabun (64):16]

And as the Prophet ﷺ had said: ❝Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity as Allaah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allaah is that which is done regularly.❞
📚[Saheehain]

Strive, and Allaah will facilitate you in it:

{As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, and believes in Al-Husna (reward from Allaah), We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness)}
📚[Surah al-Layl (92): 5-7]

{And those who are guided – He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.}
📚 [Surah Muhammad (47):17]

The People and the Noble Qur’an.

From “40 Hadith on the Qur’ān: Principles for the Bearer of the Qur’ān”

Wathila ibn al-Asqa’ reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said;

“The Suhuf (scrolls) of Ibrahim were revealed on the first night of Ramadhan, the Torah on the sixth of Ramadhan,  The Injeel (Gospel) on the thirteenth of Ramadhan, and the Furqan (Qur’ān) on the twenty-fourth of Ramadhan.”

In Mu’jam al-Awsat by Tabrani no. 3740, there is an additional sentence, “…and the Zabur (what was revealed on Prophet Dawud) on the eighteenth of Ramadhan…”.

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said;

“If anyone prays at night reciting ten Ayat, he will not be recorded among the negligent (ghafileen); if anyone prays at night and recites a hundred Ayat, he will be recorded among those who are devout (qaniteen) to Allah; and if anyone prays at night reciting one thousand Ayat, he will be [recorded amongst those who] receive an immeasurable amount of reward.”

The father of Abdullah ibn Burayda al-Aslami رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said;

“Whoever recited the Qur’ān and acted according to it; on the Day of Judgment his parents will be given to wear a crown whose light is better than the light of the sun in the dwellings of this world if it were among you. So what do you think of him who acts according to this?”

Ibn Taymiyyah said, “Whoever contemplates (tadabbur) upon the Qur’ān (with the condition) of seeking guidance from it, (then) the path of truth will be made clear for him.”

[64]Aqeedah al-Wasityah by Ibn Taymiyyah. Sufyan ibn Uyaynah said, “The beginning of knowledge is to (firstly) listen, then understand, then memorise, then act upon, then spread to others. When a slave (of Allah) listens to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah with an honest and sincerely true intention upon that which Allah loves, then he will understand… and He will enter light into his heart.” Tafsir Qurtubi

The ruling on seeking blessings from the Prophet’s ﷺ grave

Q: Is it permissible to seek blessings in the grave of the Prophet

A: This act is not permissible and it is a Bid`ah (innovation in religion) and one of the means leading to Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship). Seeking blessings from such and such, or the walls of the Ka`bah its columns and the like is Bid`ah and can lead to Shirk if the one doing so thinks that they are sources of blessings. If they do so on the basis that it is allowed, their doing will be considered as Bid`ah and should be avoided. Indeed, Allah made it allowable to seek blessings from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) during his lifetime. Likewise, Allah (عز وجل) legislated seeking blessings in the water of Zamzam (a well near the Ka`bah) for Allah made it blessed.

Accordingly, a believer should adhere to the Shari’ah (Islamic law) of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) and keep away from what disagrees with it. May Allah grant us success.
